Top new bands 2012
2012 was a year of many discoveries and endless music streaming on the net. Bandcamp and Soundcloud now make for the essential toolkit for new bands’ emergence, even pushing a few of them to unexpected festival lineups and impressive opening acts. Most of these short treasures are promising debut EPs. We will hear more from these in the years to come.
On a personal level, with this list here, it seems quite obvious to me that internet streams, as opposed to a proper iTunes playlist, is where I go to get some immediate catchy pop riffs. This is easy listening music, except perhaps the dude on the top spot.
The Royal Concept - The Royal Concept (EP)
** this band is great, but their originality suffers from being obvious Phoenix copycats.
Sun City - Set Alight (EP)
The Neighbourhood - I’m Sorry… (EP)
** sweater weather is some kind of violently cheesy tune : catchy is the keyword here
YAWN - Happy Tears (EP)
**The song Yabis has an humble pinch of psychedelia. Great song on an uneven EP.
S O H N - The Wheel (EP)
Chali XCX - You’re the One (EP)
** Charli XCX is the freakin’ sexy hipster next-door, probably featured on all “next big thing” lists of 2012. She rocked a libidinous leopard leotard at this year’s edition of Osheaga. All eyes and ears on her swoons and croons.
KO KO - Float (EP)
** Featuring very promising vocals, crafty instrumentations and lyrics as “wide open spaces can be so cruel”. Definitely the band to watch.
St. Lucia - St. Lucia (EP)
**to hear this guy’s “all eyes on you” in the latest Victoria Secret advert was a bit of a shocker, as much as it made for the perfect eye/ear candy.
MS MR - Candy Bar Creep Show (EP)
** Hurricane is by far one of my favorite songs of 2012. Deep, sharp vocals, half-harmonized, layered on a wall of dark echoes. This band is serious, so is its new cult following.
Doldrums - Egypt (EP)
** I’m so glad that I went past my first live impression on this guy. There is such a raw lack of inhibition in his performances, that my judging mind couldn’t make sure if it wasn’t the most ridiculous act of the year. But the actual music proves me wrong. It’s complex, twisted, acute, fresh, and consistent. The new song “She is the wave” released later in the year promises even more from this Montreal fucked up prodigy. Yet another local pride coming to the surface.
